Bag from felted sweater: the prototype
August 22nd, 2005This is the first in my series of knitting bags from felted sweaters (the ALP bag from previous post was the second bag). Designed for a redheaded friend with feminine tastes, it’s from a rosy brown women’s sweater, felted to make a small-to-medium-sized bag. I needlefelted a rose on each side patterned loosely after the lining fabric.
(Picky grammarians take note: I am aware that the correct term for throwing wool in the washing machine to shrink is “fulling,” but it just seems so contrived to put it that way. You’ll have to substitute the correct term in your mind as you read my blog. I don’t mind if you cluck and shake your head.)

Beautiful! I love the needlefleted rose. And I don’t care if you call it felting or fulling
.

That’s a beautiful bag! I love the rose detail and how it complements the lining. Or is the the other way around? Anyway. I wouldn’t have guessed it was from a felted sweater until you said so; now I see that the v at the top could be from a v-neck sweater. Your friend is very lucky!

What a great way to recycle! They’re both awesome.

That’s some fancy schmancy needle felting there! Very nice.

Jeeze, I get lazy and you’ve read Harry Potter and sewn masterpieces! Wow! The novice sewer over here is drooling. The felt bag is totally pro and I love what you did for the swap. You’ll have one very happy recipient.
Talk away about Harry. I gave it some thought in the days after I finished.

Fabu felted purse! Now you have given me ideas for the black merino hoodie that I accidentally “fulled” in the washer last week.
Happen to agree with you regarding felting/fulling terminology. Hey before I started to knit, I just called it shrinking.

So very beautiful! You’ll have to let us in on the secret of making these great bags!

Very nice purse. I like the stitching on the sides and the nice lining you chose. The rose on the front is a great touch. I am a rose fan.

Wow! I have a black wool sweater… well… used to… My husband felted it for me in the wash last winter.
I think I’ll follow your inspiring lead and turn it into a purse! Yours looks fantastic.
