Blood sugar rush
November 1st, 2005Husband and brother have October birthdays. We hosted the big joint celebration last weekend with a house full of overnight guests. While both have a fondness for sweets, their tastes are distinctly different, so we had two separate birthday cakes. Husband prefers lemon-y, coconut-y desserts—a bit mystifying for my family of chocoholics, but they love him, and choose to overlook this eccentricity.
With house guests returned home, and no hope for late trick-or-treaters, we’ve got a house full of sweets:
- 2 bags of leftover Halloween candy. There was a big drop off in kiddie numbers this year.
- 3/4 of Chocolate Potato Cake (great, great grandmother’s cherished family recipe—it may sound gross to the uninitiated, but it is fabulous)
- One entire homemade coconut cream pie. We’ve already eaten the other one.
Someone, please, take the sugar away.
Feet of happy mom
I really have knit three pairs of socks this month—honest! Here’s the most recently finished, shown first, since they were the first gifted.
It was an experiment; one of Mom’s feet swells, so I wasn’t sure that I could make a sock that fit well. Super-stretchy sock yarn plus a pretty lace pattern equaled success.
Halloween accessory, or true identity revealed?
Younger, dreadlocked stepdaughter made it down from the redwoods for the weekend. Her Halloween costume has clarified something that I think we already knew. She picked up some ears for her costume yesterday, and hasn’t taken them off since… there’s something about them that’s just right somehow.
Normal California hippy, or actual woodland elf?

Congratulations on 3 pairs of socks!! These pink ones are gorgeous!
I love the ears too. They do seem right.

Nice socks! Your mom must be stoked.
We noticed a big drop off in trick or treaters too, this year—I wonder what’s up? I’m trying to push all the leftover candy on my coworkers. They’ve been complaining, but not THAT much,...
Your stepdaughter is cute. Is she up in Humboldt? That’s definitely the perfect place to be a woodland elf,...

Goodness, your stepdaughter is the prettiest elf I’ve ever seen! Those ears certainly seem to suit her!

Great socks! And wow! three whole pair knit? I’m impressed.
And yes, stepdaughter looks like she is from middle earth—what a cutie with those ears! If I looked that good with ears like that I might never take them off either.

Hi Sara-
Thanks for commenting and your generous offer to send stuff to Pumpkin and I! It’s been really hard and the P-Man is really stressed, I’ve found him trying to sleep in his litter box a few times! And I’ve been too sick to knit! Imagine that??
I’m sorry I’m posting this here but I couldn’t find your email addy…we will be ok and your generosity and kindness make this horrible situation a bit more bearable! Thank you, Sara.

PS - Great socks and great compilation of short row references, can’t wait to peruse them when I back on line without batteries!

Thanx for the advice about Magic Loop, I’ve used it for one sock before, but not yet, for 2 – that’ll be my next adventure.

Wow, I love those socks! Sara dude, you are a knitting queen. I was getting really proud of myself for finishing one glove in a weekend.
I toted my AWESOME knitting bag around with me this holiday and got compliments everywhere, especially the yarn shop I stopped in at. Thanks again!

Couldn’t find an email link on your site. zeneedle sent me a note that I had won a bag by you. By looking at your site, that’s pretty exciting news!
I’m leaving for L.A. tomorrow afternoon and will be gone for 10 days. Maybe we can communicate after Christmas.
I hope all is well with you and yours
