Dad, don’t read the following entry

October 18th, 2005

Seriously, Dad, I’m going to talk in this brief entry about something I found to make for you that’s just about perfect, so don’t read on.

...

...

(Does it ever work, by the way, to make this request? If I were asked specifically not to read something, I think I’d get all itchy, worry about it, then read it anyway. Am I alone in this? I believe that my father has this kind of discipline, however.)

...

...

The first issue of Men Knit is up. I am so going to make my dad some Bicycle Helmet Ear Warmers. Dad frequently does 100-mile bike rides and runs half-marathons. One of his favorite rides is along the cold Northern California coast in September.

Next year I’ll make sure he’ll have warm ears.

Busy, busy

October 13th, 2005

Well, it’s been a while! I’ve been out a lot in the last month. Despite all, life has been pretty balanced, with tons accomplished on the knitting and BackTack front. The two things that have suffered most have been the knit blog, and my nutrition. I choose to turn my attention back to these items. Along with finding more time in my schedule to post, I pledge the following:

From this point on, I will no longer classify any of these food combinations as a “meal”

  • Coffee with Splenda and milk
  • Ice cream and diet Coke
  • Chips plus diet Coke

Apparently, I have forgotten how to feed myself responsibly. Now, it’s true: I’ve never enjoyed cooking. Husband loves to cook, and I have encouraged this hobby. Unfortunately, Husband has been away at night even more than I have. He would come home after 9:00 p.m., and ask what I ate for dinner. I got into the habit of eating a bowl of cereal, since at least it’s somewhat nutritious. I didn’t like his expression when I would answer (truthfully) something embarrassing like “Umm… tortilla chips and sparkling cider.” To my credit, I at least had a sheepish expression as I admitted it.

Leave the house with a knitting bag and an audiobook on the trusty iPod, and it’s amazing what can get accomplished. Since I last wrote, I’ve swatched several possible yarn substitutes for a big Christmas gift (I’ll just wink and call it “Audrey,” and my friends in the knitting blog world will understand), swatched a sweater for me, and finished 2 pairs of socks, both to be gifted. I still have to get used to the earlier sunset, so I’m not together enough to have photos of these things yet—coming soon.

Reasons to reconsider my nearly all-black wardrobe

No blog entry is complete without visual interest, so I rely upon the cliche cat photo. You haven’t yet met Eddy, our new kitten. We got him in early June when he was 10 weeks old. Here’s a look at him when he first came to live with us:

Eddy at 10 weeks

Wilson wasn’t too happy about this at first, but pretty quickly he began to groom Eddy, and has become quite a good Momma cat. He does a really, really thorough job with the grooming (cleaning places on Eddy that I, for one, wouldn’t touch without rubber gloves). They’ve bonded:

The bathroom window, their favorite place to lounge:

Kitties lounging

Yup, I’m going through lots of those sticky-tape cat-hair-picker-upper thingies.

Celebrity sighting

August 10th, 2005

What a fun evening — last Tuesday I enjoyed a lovely room full of yarn, knitters, and the Yarn Harlot :

Stephanie, the Yarn Harlot The Draw
If you get a chance to see her, go. You won’t regret it. Stephanie is everything charming and funny, just as you would expect. Still chuckling about “bacon powder.” We got to see the sock and the famous Birch shawl. I have never seen so many people knitting at one time before. The room was buzzing with laughter and camaraderie. What a treat!

It must be exhausting for her—I was there for 2.5 hours, and when I left there was a long line remaining. That’s tough for someone who claims to be uncomfortable in front of crowds (I’m sure it’s true, but it doesn’t show—she seemed perfectly at ease).

The Venue
It was my first time visiting Stash in Berkeley. I got way too excited about their shelving (see background of above photo). I mentioned it to, like, everyone, because I’m such a nerd. So, OK, my mom owned a yarn shop, where I worked starting at age thirteen. Stacking yarn in bins is a big part of the job. Those nasty Debbie Bliss-style puff skeins started showing up after mom closed the shop, and I’ve felt for yarn shop employees ever since. They topple over at the slightest provocation, looking chaotic and frustrating customers who try to cram them back on the shelf without dropping yarn to the floor. You know what I mean. It’s a pretty way to present yarn, but it’s not very practical. Well, Stash had narrow shelves built, which fit those nasty skeins perfectly. Everything is beautiful and orderly. Ahhhhhhh.

The Crowd
I walked in the door 15 minutes early, and there was only one chair left open. Happily, it ended up to be directly in front of Janine and Rachael, and next to blogless Maia.

Nice knitters

I also got a chance to meet Celia (wearing Kidsilk haze in orange) and Emily in her Nothin’ but a T. As the line passed Lorna’s Laces, the subject of Clapotis came up, and Kathleen and her friend each whipped a version of it out of their knitting bags. Maia was very persuasive as she talked about spinning, and with all the gorgeous handspun she showed me I was nearly swayed, but I remain resolute. Unfortunately, though she was wearing her distinctive shoes, I missed meeting Becca, but hopefully we’ll meet soon at her Knitblogger Picnic. I’m so glad I got up the nerve to start up a conversation with those nearby. This was my first chance to meet other bloggers. Knitters are the nicest folks.

Just finished Harry Potter…

July 17th, 2005

...and am dying to talk to someone about it without spoiling anything. I don’t want to say much, but 16-year-old Harry Potter is a lot easier to hang out with than the snotty, sullen 15-year-old version. Also, there’s lots of snogging in the book. I was a bit concerned about getting a copy yesterday, with all the hype about pre-ordering, reserved copies, and whatnot. No worries, though – there are plentiful copies in several stores. Everybody, get busy reading!

I’m visiting my parents this weekend in the incredibly hot Sacramento Valley. Really, seriously hot. When Dad says, “Oh, good, it’s cooling off a bit,” and the temperature is now a more bearable 102 degrees, you know it’s bad. When I drove up Friday night it was still 90 degrees outside – at 9:30 p.m. People talk about California heat being easier to tolerate because of the lack of humidity. It’s true, I’ve been on the East Coast in the summer, and that muggy weather is brutal. But when it’s 108 outside, it’s just not pleasant.

For a bit of knitting content, look to page 73 of the new Harry Potter. Says Dumbledore: “I do love knitting patterns.”

Get reading!

Furniture, old and new

May 10th, 2005

Husband and I, after 12 years together, finally bought new furniture for the living room. It was delivered Saturday afternoon. Hurrah!

It meant, though, that we’d need to move the old stuff. The chair was no big deal, but the old couch—oh, my. It’s an 8-foot sleeper sofa, so those who’ve moved furniture before know that it’s A) unreasonably heavy, and B) difficult to maneuver around corners.

So, of course, we want to use the old sofa to complete a sanctuary in the spare bedroom at the end of a narrow hallway. As much as I’d like to believe that I’m very strong and capable of heavy lifting, I have to admit that Husband did a full 85% of the work. My actual role: balance stuff, fetch things, or suggest “helpful ideas” while Husband grunts, sweats and lifts.

After grunting, sweating, and cursing that was impressive in its vigor and creativity, we determined that we’d have to put the thing on its end to get it around the corner.

This proved an opportunity for Wilson that was too tempting to pass up. His ancestors used to climb trees in Norway… Since at last check we have no Norwegian trees in the house, he’ll climb any substitute—including our backs and shoulders. An upended couch proved no difficulty. In half a second he was lounging next to the ceiling with an insouciant kitty grin:

Wilson helps move the couch

Husband is in the background, enjoying the break, half appalled and half impressed by the cat.

We couldn’t reach him, and calling him didn’t work, so I got a treat, bent over and put it on my back to give him a place to land. “Good boy, Willie!” I said, when he jumped down to get it.

As I congratulated myself on my quick problem solving skills—those of you more experienced with the whole positive-reinforcement method of disciplining animals can predict what happened next—he immediately climbed back up.

Naughty kitty

Clearly, I’ve got a lot to learn with the whole pet-owning thing.

Good knitting day…

March 22nd, 2005

...even though there’s been, as yet, no knitting.

Got a notice from Purl Gurl that Debbie Stoller was going to be at Oakland’s Article Pract for a little book signing. We had emailed briefly about a possible carpool to SF to see her, but my schedule has been dicey, so that was not likely to happen. The Oakland thing was perfect, though… thanks, Purl Gurl! My stepdaughters both got interested in knitting around Christmas, so I let each of them take a Stitch & Bitch book. I’ve been itching to get another copy—there are projects in these books that I want to add to the list soon. Now I’ve got my very own signed copies:

Signed Stitch & Bitch books

I was too shy to say much, but she seemed really nice.

When I got home, I was greeted by a great package from the Bronx:

Sockapalooza pal socks

They’re beautiful, purple-y and comfy. Thanks so much, Nancy! I really appreciate all of your hard work.

I just realized that I never posted a photo of the finished socks I made, currently on their way to Austin:

Auntie time

March 18th, 2005

My older brother called yesterday, and asked if six-year-old Matthew could stay with us while he and Matthew’s mom got away for a quick overnight to Napa. Sure!

Just got back from the grocery store. What a trip to do with a little guy! He quickly established East, West, North and South, and we used those directions to navigate. Our mission:

  • ice cream
  • chocolate chips
  • whipped cream
  • maraschino cherries
  • peanut butter

He quickly established that the chocolate chips and peanut butter could do double duty: perfect for tomorrow’s cookie batch, but also brilliant on the ice cream. Matthew and the husband are in the kitchen building the World’s Most Perfect Sundae, and we’re about to watch the Incredibles. Big night!

While the movie’s on, I’m going to frog the rest of that white thrift store sweater, and then tomorrow might just be the day for Kool Aid dyeing. Woo hoo!

I’ve been tagged for an interview by Suzie—coming soon! Right now the World’s Best Sundae Maker is calling from the living room…

Blue hands

February 16th, 2005

Today was my weekly visit to the chiropractor for treatments designed to cure me of allergies. Husband and I refer to her as “The Voodoo Doctor;” traditional Western medicine doesn’t acknowledge this as a legitimate treatment, but I know a couple of people who’ve had good results. Hey, it’s Northern California, after all.

I’m allergic to a million things. I have a hard time imagining what my life would be without them – it would have a lot fewer headaches, I’m sure. Skeptics would say that it’s this promise that keeps me going back every week to shell out another 50 bucks. Could be I’m a sucker – who knows? Because I have so many sensitivities, I’m supposed to do this full, 13-week treatment for nutritional and environmental substances before we can even think about getting to cats (issue Numero Uno, IMO). Skeptic in me has already calculated the price of suckerhood to be at least 14 x $50, or a cool $700 of uninsured medical expenses. But the optimist chimes in right away, “But think of all the money you’ll save on allergy medicine! And no more skull-crushing headaches – ever!”

The treatments go like this: I hold an offending substance in my hand, chiropractor does some voodoo over me, I avoid the substance for 25 hours after treatment, and I’m cured for that substance.

This week the substance is metal. Do you know how hard it is to avoid metal? Plastic gloves are recommended. I look like this today:

Sara with smurf hands

“You’re lucky,” says Dr. VooDoo. “Your meridians will clear up by midnight.”
(Sara’s note: “!!”)

This, I learn, means that I can finally lose the gloves when I go to bed, so I don’t have to do the full 25 hours. Thank goodness. Until then, I have weird, alien Smurf hands. Willie, the reason for all the sneezin’, is deeply suspicious.

Sara, that's just not right!

Testing image options

February 7th, 2005

Adding more functions to the new blog… Here’s a test; it’s a work-in-progress image that will eventually make it to the blog header once it’s spruced up a bit:

no, my arms aren't skinny like that

Hmmmmmm…. will my image function work?
